MTS Introduces New D-Series Sensor

MTS Systems Corp. Sensors Division reports that they have developed the D-series sensor, a low-cost displacement sensor with Temposonics magnetostrictive sensing technology.

"The D-Series sensor utilizes MTS' patented non-contact sensing technology with the highest possible durability in linear positioning," said an MTS spokesperson. "With a measuring range of 50-1500mm and a direct position output of 0-10V, the D-Series is ideal for plastics, packaging and materials-handling machinery that currently use linear potentiometers, limit switches or similar technology for motion control, based on cost considerations."

"Taking advantage of MTS' advances in low-cost manufacturing processes developed for our automotive industry products, the D-Series was created so that cost sensitive, high volume OEMs can now have access to our proven sensor technology," said Dave Edeal, Temposonics product marketing manager for MTS. "It provides the same benefits of magnetostrictive technology found in all Temposonics sensors-high durability, zero-maintenance, and most importantly, accurate linear positioning-at a fraction of the price."

"The compact D-Series sensors are capable of linearity better than 0.01% and repeatability of 0.005% and a position update rate of 1.5 kHz," said the spokesperson. "As with all magnetostrictive sensors, the D-Series requires no recalibration after initial installation and eliminates wear, noise and erroneous signal problems. These sensors are designed for original equipment manufacturers that need a durable, low-cost sensor in injection molding machines and related plastic machinery.

"Each D-Series sensor is equipped with a waveguide sensing element, conditioning electronics for output position data, a protective IP 67 rated application housing that accommodates the complete modular electronic interface with active signal conditioning. The sensor can be easily mounted to machine surfaces with adjustable mounting clamps. Electronic connections are accomplished using the industry standard 4 pole socket DIN connectors. The D-Series supply voltage is 24 Vdc with 30 Vdc polarity and 36 Vdc overvoltage protection included standard."
