Hermle Offers New U 740 Machining Center

Although recent Hermle product offerings have stressed increased production and automation capability, the new U 740 machining center demonstrates that the company has not forgotten its roots. The U 740 machining center is specifically designed for toolroom, moldmaking and other specialized applications.  Like its predecessor, the U 630, the new U 740 delivers precision performance with rugged construction - but that is where the resemblance stops.  Incorporating the latest advances in geometry and control and featuring an off-set spindle, the U 740 offers the prototype or small-lot producer quality and flexibility at an accessible price.

Constructed on a mineral casting base and utilizing Hermle's 3-point support geometry, the U 740 features travels of 740 mm in the X axis, 500 mm in the Y axis and 500 mm in the Z axis. Spindle speed ranges from 12 to 18,000 rpm and the work table can handle up to 700 kilograms.  Two tool changers are available.  The chain magazine handles 16 SK 40 tools with a maximum length of 280 mm and a maximum tool diameter of 80 mm.  An optional ring magazine with 28 pockets for either SK 40 or HSK A 63 tools with a maximum length of 300 mm and a maximum diameter of 80 mm.  Table options include a rigid clamping table measuring 900 x 500 mm and capable of holding 700 kilograms or a NC rotary table 630 mm in diameter that can accommodate parts up to 500 kilograms.

Spindle Design

Designed with a swiveling head that encloses the spindle and spindle motor, the U 740 utilizes a patented Z off-set that minimizes the distance between the table and the tool to 40 mm, thus eliminating the necessity for support plates under flat parts.  The main spindle (or B-axis) swivels from -5¡ to +95¡ continuously and can be activated either manually with digital display or by full CNC control.

Designed with a compact footprint, the U 740 can be transported completely assembled. No special foundation is required. The control offered is the Heidenhain iTNC 530 equipped with ethernet interface and a hard drive for program transfer and storage.

Complex Part Capability

According to Kenneth J. Merk, Executive VP-Sales & Service of Hermle Machine, "The U 740 offers the traditional Hermle customer the latest in machining capability for both conventional and complex parts.  Equipped with a CNC B-axis and a NC rotary table, the U 740 is ideal for 5-side machining or 5-axis simultaneous work.  Hermle is and always has been extremely sensitive to the special needs of toolrooms and job shops and has designed the 740 in a way that enables us to offer 5-axis capability and flexibility in a reachable price range.  Considering the quality, durability and flexibility of the machine, we believe that, in that price range, it meets Hermle's corporate commitment to outstanding customer value."
