Hurco Introduces VMX50S In-Line Spindle
New from Hurco is the VMX50S, a
high-speed version of Hurco's VMX50. The 15,000-rpm spindle has a 40 hp Yaskawa
spindle motor that delivers 131 ft-lbs of torque at 1400 rpm and accelerates to
full speed in 5 seconds. This machine has a spindle chiller and coolant through
the spindle for heat management. Additionally, the VMX50S has a standard wash
down and conveyor chip management system.
The control software of the VMX50S has also been upgraded to accommodate customer needs for high-speed hard milling of dies and molds. The VMX50S UltiMax(r) control has Hurco's Adaptive Software Finishing software, which utilizes advanced software algorithms for NC data smoothing, advanced comer slowdown, S-curve acceleration calculations, and stiction and backlash compensation. These algorithms result in a 2000 block per second processing speed, a 600 block look ahead, and a sliding 600 block look ahead. To attain these speeds this package includes additional processing power, a 566 MHz processor, 128 MB Ram, and an 80 MHz DSP motion card. These components perform the high-speed data calculations needed for fast servo updates, while preventing data starvation. The result is 3-D surfaces with surface finishes produced with cycle time reduction.
Hurco's VMX50S incorporates a new concept in spindle drive technology, the InLine spindle. Previously, high-speed spindles used either a belt drive between the motor and spindle or expensive motorized spindles. Belt drive tended to induce vibrations, which affect part quality. Motorized spindles not only have a high initial investment cost but also very high repair and maintenance expenses. "Hurco's approach is to directly align the spindle motor atop the spindle with a high performance coupling. The result is higher spindle performance with low vibration and a high torque capacity, and a spindle system that uses a conventional cartridge spindle for low product life cost," a company spokesperson stated.
"The VMX50S provides high metal removal rates for non-ferrous materials and provides an exceptional hard steel milling finish for mold-makers significantly reducing the need for P pass finishes and bench polishing, which helps our mold making customers improve operational efficiency," says Pat McKee, VP of sales and marketing for Hurco Companies. "Hurco has been working closely with this highly competitive segment of users to continue to bring a systems approach to the advances in high-speed machining. That is what the VMX50S with Adaptive Surface Finishing software does."
