Mazak's Super Mold Maker 2500: A Double-Column Vertical Machining Center

With cutting rates of up to 1968 ipm at 0.7G acceleration, Mazak's Super Mold Maker 2500 is designed to increase productivity in the precision parts and die and mold industries through super high-speed and high-accuracy machining.

Using a 30 hp integral spindle motor, Mazak's Super Mold Maker 2500 can achieve spindle speed acceleration from zero to 25,000 rpm in just 4.5 seconds and rapid traverse and maximum cutting feed rates for all axes of 1968 inches per minute with 0.7 G acceleration. Also, tool changes of 4.2 seconds, chip-to-chip time, translate to higher productivity by reducing non-cutting time.

Mazak's Super Mold Maker 2500 also offers a generous table size of 47.2" x 21.6" and axis travels of X=40.15", Y=20.07", Z=18.11". Its tool magazine stores 30 tools.

To maintain high accuracy, the ballscrew has core cooling and coolant temperature control. During rapid feed, rapid acceleration and prolonged operation, the ballscrew undergoes thermal expansion and machining accuracy can suffer. By passing coolant through the core of the ballscrew, the Super Mold Maker 2500 prevents thermal displacement of the ballscrew, allowing high-accuracy mold machining over extended machine operation. Also, to prevent the coolant that has absorbed the heat generated in cutting from causing thermal expansion in other parts of the machine, the coolant is cooled to a controlled constant temperature.

Moreover, high accuracy is achieved with a rigid base and column that used finite element analysis (FEA) for initial design. Vibration reduction is demonstrated with a double column construction and Y-axis table travel, which provides better accessibility and operability then a C-frame type. The integral high precision spindle motor also delivers circular interpolation accuracy by minimizing vibration. High accuracy machining is also ensured by the elimination of table overhang.

The Super Mold Maker 2500 is run with the Mazatrol Fusion 640 CNC control. Its 64-bit RISC processor executes Mazatrol and EIA/ISO programs faster than 32-bit systems. The Mazatrol Fusion 640 CNC architecture fuses advanced CNC with PC technology to provide shop floor information and efficiency in real time.

Shop floor programming tools include: Mazatrol interactive programming; tool libraries with cutting parameters; realistic 3D graphics for solid model part cutting and tool path simulation; and a Navigation function that optimizes cutting conditions to slash lead and setup times. Mazatrol Fusion 640 CNC can be easily networked with the rest of your operations using standard protocols. This allows functions like program downloading to be done by an off-line PC using Mazak's Camwareš, remote cycle time optimization, monitoring of machine status and production operations and scheduling to be performed while the machine is cutting.
