Mobile ORII G-50 Simulates Hand-Feed Motion to Automatically Load Small Stamping Presses

The mobile G-50 pick and place robot from ORII Corporation of America can be easily moved between presses to fully automate sheet metal stamping operations.

The G-50 is mounted on wheels and can be rolled across the shop floor or carried by lift truck from press to press. Two quick-release single-action toggle clamps rigidly secure the unit to the front of the press in seconds, making even short batch runs cost effective.

The G-50 robot is designed to replace manual feeding. It simulates the motion of lifting a steel sheet from a stack of blanks and automatically placing it accurately on a die, at up to 20 times a minute. The G-50 unit can handle blanks weighing up to 3.3 lbs. (1.5 kg) and measuring up to 8" x 12" (200mm x 300mm). It is one of a full line of high performance robots manufactured by ORII for automating press-stamping operations.

Once installed, the robot's automatic cycle is initiated by simply pressing the start button. One person can attend several units at a time, making them a cost-effective alternative to manual loading operations.

In operation, vacuum cups lift the blank from the vertical magazine and feed it into the press. The arm lowers and releases the blank onto the die, lifts itself clear and retracts from the press, initiating the press stroke. Electromagnets are available in place of vacuum cups.

G-50 Series robots are adaptable to virtually any small tonnage open back stationary (OBS) and open back inclinable (OBI) gap-frame press, as well as small tonnage straight-side presses, and can accommodate a wide range of die heights. A jacktype adjustment or an optional motorized pass line adjustment can raise or lower the G-50 up to four inches (100mm) from its base configuration.

A double rod air cylinder and extra long guides prevent the workpiece from twisting or turning during forward extension into the die set, and provide smooth operation and long, service-free life. Sensors within the hand assembly verify that the blank is held correctly. Detection of a mishandled blank will immediately shut down the system.

G-50 units are equipped with two vertical magazines allowing one magazine to be loaded while the second is in use. The magazine lifts automatically as the blanks are removed. A low-level sensor signals the press operator for reloading.

A preset counter, magnet holders and a warning light are available as optional features. To enhance press automation, the system can be upgraded to include unloaders and palletizers.

ORII engineers, manufacturers and markets press room automation systems including coil handling line systems consisting of NC roll feed lines, NC straightner/feed lines, roll feed, air feed, and sheet feed lines. The company also manufactures pick and place and transfer robots, destackers, loaders, turnover equipment; and other material handling equipment and systems. ORII press automation equipment is in operation in more than 12,000 applications.
