Tong-Tai (Topper) Introduces the MDV551 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center

"In the 21st century high-tech world of complex mold and design parts, many manufacturers are looking for a more sophisticated method to manufacture these parts," said a Tong-Tai spokesperson. "Many manufacturers are looking at the new design of 5-axis integrated machines in order to speed up manufacturing, provide higher accuracies and allow for lower tooling and fixturing costs. With this in mind, Tong-Tai has introduced a new, simultaneous motion, 5-axis precision vertical machining center.

"This machining center is capable of performing multiple complex machining processes in one setup with greater accuracy and dramatically reduce work in process time. It uses a unique mechanism for the tilting and rotating axes (A and C axes), which provides high rigidity during simultaneous axis movement with no backlash. The MDV551 is a highly productive 5-axis vertical machining center with powerful cutting capacity and high speed machining capabilities.

"The machine equipped with a 30 HP, 12,000 RPM, variable AC main spindle drive motor, 30 position automatic tool changer, a roller cam 4th and 5th axis table with no backlash, bundled with the latest F-18iM (5) or a Heidenhein control. The 30-staion automatic tool changer allows random access to tools up to 11.8-inch long and weighing 17.6 pounds. Tools that are seven inches in diameter may be handled if the adjacent pockets are open. The #40 taper V-flange shank tools (or an optional HSKA63) can be easily loaded. The carousel is mounted to the side of the machine, with the tool change mechanism residing outside of the working envelope, shielded by a shutter door during the cutting cycle. This design eliminates tool and work piece interference, as well as the negative effects of exposure to chips and coolant. Approximate tool change time is 0.9 seconds (tool-to-tool). No hydraulics is used for spindle tool clamping.

"The machine positioning accuracy is + 0.00012-inch/full stroke. Repeatability is + 0.00004-inch. Ball screw compensation is preset at the factory to guarantee these specifications. Superb accuracy is obtained by using a roller gear drive mechanism (globoidal) for the A and C axes."
