MAG Giddings & Lewis Introduces New VTC 1000 Vertical Turning Center

"Receiving market introduction at IMTS, the new Giddings & Lewis VTC 1000 brings shorter cycle times, modular machine-to-job matching and live-spindle one-stop processing capability to mid-range vertical turning requirements," said a spokesperson. "Meeting needs for higher productivity and precision, the VTC 1000 combines faster turning speeds - 630 RPM standard, 1,100 RPM optional - with enhanced C-axis positioning capabilities. A comprehensive range of machine modules and options - 1,000 or 1,250 mm tables, fixed or adjustable rails, range of travels and heights under the rail, turret head option and choice of tool magazine capacities - allow the VTC 1000 to be configured for standard turning, hard turning, live spindle machining and cutting on multiple sides for a wide range of part sizes.

"Affordably priced, the VTC 1000 is a versatile general machine for jobs shops, bearing manufacturers, valve and pump makers, automotive and aerospace contractors, and other producers of large, turned parts.

"A compact platform, 13.2 ft. wide x 13.6 ft. deep, saves valuable floor space while accepting weights of 5,000 lbs or more. Ergonomic design allows 1,300 mm swing capacity, wide operator access to parts and easy crane loading. The VTC can be configured for under the rail heights from 1,200 to 1,700 mm to accommodate a great combination of pallet depths and workpiece heights. Floor-level design eliminates need for special foundations and simplifies loading of parts, tooling and accessories.

"The VTC 1000 continues the MAG Giddings & Lewis tradition of a rigid platform enabling heavy cutting with high accuracy. Robust construction features reinforced columns and beds. The hydrostatic ram combines high rigidity with thermal symmetry. The VTC 1000 delivers 84 kW peak power and 56 kW continuous power (100/75 HP) and maximum table torque of 17,113 Nm (12,623 ft lb).

"A live spindle option provides multi-functional processing capabilities, enabling milling, drilling, tapping and other machining operations, all in the same fixturing, to help speed manufacturing velocity. Full contouring with C-axis enables drilling or mill turning of features anywhere on the workpiece with contouring/positioning by 360,000 position table.

"An optional eight-position turret head provides excellent productivity on parts that don't require a lot of reach into the part.

"The state-of-the-art VTC was co-developed with MAG sister company Hessapp. The machine size allows MAG to offer a continuum of VTC machines. The VTC 1000 fits between Hessap models with 250 to 750 mm swing and G&L's proven VTC line offering tables/chucks from 1,250 mm to 3,500 mm."
