Hermle Offers C 40 U for Mid-sized Part Machining

Hermle Machine Company has introduced the C 40 U, offering increased output in mid-sized parts. The C 40 U and C 40 U Dynamic were developed in response to worldwide demand for higher speed and productivity in complex 5-axis applications and reflect Hermle's experience in simultaneous multi-axis machining, the company said.

The C 40 U utilizes Hermle's patented gantry design in combination with an 800 mm diameter tilting rotary table capable of simultaneous machining of work pieces up to 1,400 kg. Production capability is enhanced by a rotational speed of 65 RPM in the C-axis (360-degrees) and up to 25 RPM in the trunion type A-axis (+25-degrees/-100-degrees).

Also available is the C 40 U with the 420 mm diameter tilting rotary table capable of simultaneous machining of work pieces up to 600 kg. Production capability is enhanced by a rotational speed of 65 RPM in the C-axis (360-degrees) and up to 55 RPM in the trunion type A-axis (+25-degrees/-100-degrees).

For increased production of smaller sized parts, the new C 40 U Dynamic is equipped with dual 280 mm diameter rotary tables mounted on the tilting trunion type A-axis. The twin rotary tables index at speeds up to 40 RPM (360-degrees), and the titling A-axis (± 115-degrees) can be actuated up to 55 RPM.

Faster production potential is assisted by a rapid traverse rate of 60 m/min in the X-Y-Z axes and acceleration of up to 10 m/s2 as an option, with 45 m/min at 6 m/s2 as standard.

Optional spindle speeds of 10,000/18,000/28,000/40,000 RPM extend the range of capabilities from high torque, hard metal operations to high-speed machining of non-ferrous parts.

Axis travels are 850, 700 and 500 mm in the X-Y-Z axes respectively. C-axis actuation utilizes a direct drive torque motor in the 420 mm and 800 mm table version, and both A and C axes feature Hermle's patented drive system. 38-tool pockets are standard. Optional magazine extensions can increase capacity from 81, 125 or 195 tools. Chip-to-chip time is 4.5 sec.

A wide range of options can be incorporated to suit specific applications or production systems.

"The ever-increasing demand for 5-axis parts, coupled with the use of new alloys and non-traditional materials, have created a need for machining centers that combine high precision with increased productivity," said a spokesperson. "The C 40 U and C 40 U Dynamic play an important role within the C Series family of machines, all designed to meet these needs."
