IHS Heat Treating Systems and Services

IHS Heat TreatingIHS, an Inductotherm Company, offers a wide selection of heat treating equipment, parts and services to benefit their customers.

One of these heat treating systems is for billet/bar heating. IHS combines their solid state, high frequency power supply, heat station, forge coil(s), operator control panel and material handling equipment into a compact, unitized package. These workcell designed heaters are quick and easy to install, energy efficient and utilize minimal floor space. Applications include all types of forging and forming operations. These systems have output power ratings from 25 kW through 1000 kW and frequencies from 1 kHz through 30 kHz. All metals, ferrous and non-ferrous, can be heated with these systems. These heaters maintain a full power draw over a wide range of billet/bar sizes.

The UNIPOWERš concept can be applied to a wide variety of heating applications. Inductors located in close proximity to the power source means low power loss and high heating efficiency resulting in more productivity and profitability for the user.

IHS motor rotor heating equipment ranges from bench-top units to completely computer controlled automatic systems. Their systems are also used for shaft insertion, lamination bluing and bond breaking for efficiency improvement.

IHS bar end heaters are used in the fastener industry for precise heating (uniform or taper heat) for hot heading. IHS induction heating systems occupy less floor space than a fuel fired furnace and because of their unitized design, can readily be relocated to other cells as production requires.

Long coil life if a product of high quality materials, design and manufacturing experience. IHS coils are electrostatically coated with a baked on high temperature epoxy resin prior to refractory encapsulation. This insulation process protects the coil from the high temperatures radiating from the part. New equipment and coils are tested at full power at run-off to ensure production rates are met.

Coil designs vary widely depending on the part configuration, application, environment and mounting requirements. Therefore, in most cases, coils are custom designed in-house in the induction coil department to suit each application.

The IHS "bench-top" UNIPOWERš is a compact solid state, induction heating power supply. Its unitized design incorporates the output transformer, heat station and operator controls into one cabinet. Heating applications include tempering, heat treating, brazing, curing, bonding and other industrial and laboratory heating applications.

IHS induction scan hardening machines or "scanners", are also a self-contained, unitized design with a built-in power supply, heat station and controls for high production needs. The scanners are programmable for maximum workpiece flexibility and can heat treat a single part or two parts simultaneously. Elongated cylindrical parts such as spindles, axleshafts and camshafts can be processed vertically on either the UNISCANš or STATISCANš. Straight shafts or tubes can be processed using the horizontal scanning machine.

IHS induction heating systems are designed to meet their customers' specifications. They have provided quality induction and resistance heating systems for industrial heating applications since 1970. Some of these applications include: „ Forging and forming „ Bonding and curing „ Annealing and tempering „ Smoldering and brazing „ Semi-solid metalworking „ Shaft insertion shrink fit „ Die cast bond breaking „ Case hardening and through hardening „ Resistance heating for forging „ Lamination oil burn-off and oxide coating „ Induction heat for stress improvement.

The IHS "in-house" process and development laboratory is always available to demonstrate and/or develop special heating applications.

Also available is UNICOOL, available in two sizes, is a closed loop, non-ferrous, water recirculating system with an internal stainless steel, water to water heat exchanger. It is designed and built to work with all types of induction heating equipment. A wide range of evaporative type cooling towers are also available for the induction systems that have higher kilowatt dissipation requirements.

After sale support is very important to IHS and they provide equipment manuals, drawings, technical data and technical service support. They also maintain a critical component spare parts inventory.
