Chevalier Releases New Double Column Grinder

"Shops demanding speed, rigidity and a very large grinding area should seriously consider getting one of Chevalier's gantry type grinders," said a company spokesperson. "Models are available with table sizes up to 118" x 276" and load capacities up to 66,000 lbs., which makes them ideal for grinding parts for aircraft, automotive, power generation and heavy machinery production. The X-axis table speed goes from 16-82 FPM, reaching strokes up to 295" while the Z/W axes stroke reaches to 189" at 0-16 FPM feed rate. Driving the spindle is a 1200 RPM motor churning 25 HP for the horizontal head using a 20" x 5" x 4" wheel and 20 HP on the vertical head using a 16" x 5" x 2" wheel. The control system is based on Chevalier's own PC-based Smart CNC control which features a three-step grinding and dressing mode, dress interrupt during cycle and a grinding simulation mode that can be done by turning the handwheel clockwise to execute and counterclockwise to reverse the program.

"Total rated power ranges from 70 HP up to 100 HP. To handle the huge coolant requirement for extended grinding cycles, the machine uses a 528-gallon coolant tank and 53 GPM paper filter powered by a 3 HP pump motor. The table, column and base design have been patented and feature two flat and one big "V" type longitudinal slide ways for optimum straightness and smooth table movement. The big "V" design also minimizes thermal deformation in all contact points. The elevating beams are steel box way type and employ a worm gear/shaft elevating mechanism, hydraulic oil braking and counterweight balance system for maximum stability. Machine vibration at the table area is eliminated as the ground beam is bolted to the ground, totally separated from the table and column structures.

"The horizontal grinding head uses NN type double row cylindrical roller bearings and runs with high precision ballscrews. The grinding head's design is cross slideway type where 60% of the load is absorbed by the needle roller slide and the other 40% by the box ways, achieving heavy loading capacity while maintaining low friction and high accuracy. Offered as options are linear scales, coolant system with oil skimmer, drum type filtration system and coolant/water heat dispersion mechanism. The electrical cabinet and cable channels are mounted on each side of the machine to save space. Shops need to allocate extra space for this machine, as well as allowances for loading and unloading workpieces: for 60 x 200 model, the base is 394" wide and front to back is 964" long. The concrete foundation should be strong enough to handle the machine's weight of over 100,000 lbs."
