High-Speed Mill Drill Center Pumps up the Volume
For high-volume production of small parts, where cycle times are short and part loading and unloading are frequent, reducing non-cutting time to a minimum is crucial to maintaining a favorable cost per part.
The new Mill Drill Center from Haas Automation, Inc., is a machining center designed to provide high-speed drilling and tapping, as well as full milling capabilities, in an affordable package.
High speed and flexibility were the key design criteria for this new machine. It features dual fixture stations that allow the operator to load and unload parts on one fixture while the machine mills, drills and taps parts on the other. Once machining is complete, a servo-powered, gear-drive changer rotates the fixture stations in less than 1.5 seconds to maintain nearly constant spindle time.
The Haas Mill Drill Center provides a work cube of 12" x 10" x 12" (xyz) and features a 10,000-rpm (15, 000-rpm optional) 40-taper spindle. Powered by a 15-hp vector drive system, the spindle has plenty of torque for milling, as well as the speed necessary for high-speed machining operations. Ultra-fast ballscrews and high-torque servo motors on all axes provide rapids to 2,000 ipm and accelerations to 0.7 G to reduce cycle times, and a high-speed side-mount tool changer (24+1 tools) changes tools in just 1.5 seconds.
To keep plenty of coolant available for any machining operation, the Haas Mill Drill Center features a 92-gallon coolant tank integrated into the base and a high-volume coolant pump.
