Ellcon-National Increases Productivity with Daewoo Machining Centers

The growing demand for unique parts required Don Shepherd, Ellcon-National's manufacturing manager, to consider the additions of several machines that could help the company meet current and future production requirements. Existing older machining centers were running at capacity. Recurrent maintenance issues due to the age of the existing equipment contributed to the decision to upgrade the machining center department.

Ellcon-National, a leading manufacturer for 93 years of fabricated railway products to the mass transit and railway industries, started its business in 1910 in New York. In 1991 the company relocated its two manufacturing facilities to

After careful consideration of their requirements, Ellcon-National decided it needed to purchase two 20" pallet horizontal machining centers and one 25" x 60" heavy duty vertical machining center. The company decided one of its main requirements would be for the new machines to be heavy duty with rigid box-way construction and #50 taper spindles.

One of the machine tool builders invited to bid on the project was Daewoo Heavy Industries, represented by Machinery Solutions, Inc. of Lexington, SC. Previously Ellcon-National purchased four Daewoo turning centers and one large Daewoo V850 vertical machining center from Machinery Solutions Inc. Ellcon-National was satisfied with its experience with existing Daewoo products' performance and reliability. After evaluating the other machine tools available and visiting several Daewoo horizontal machining center users in the area, Ellcon-National made the decision to purchase two Daewoo DMH-500 heavy duty, 20" pallet horizontal machining centers and one Daewoo DMV-650 heavy duty 25" x 60" vertical machining center.

Daewoo offers 47 models of turning centers, 13 models of vertical machining centers and seven models of horizontal machining centers. "Few customer applications fall out of the realm of possibility for a Daewoo turning or machining center product," said Carl Amick, CEO of Machinery Solutions, Inc. "Daewoo has met and surpassed our expectations over the years. They are as fine a company to work with as I have experienced in my 30 years in the industry and they have become the core of our business. We certainly understand why Daewoo has become the 3rd largest importer of machine tools into the United States. We intend to make every one of our customers aware of Daewoo's place in the market and show them how they can spend less money and get greater value in the machine for the investment made."

Don Shepherd stated that Daewoo and Machinery Solutions, Inc. were able to meet Ellcon-National's delivery requirements for an immediate impact in increased production. Shepherd also said, "Machinery Solutions earned the sale because Daewoo machines provide a good value at a fair price. The Daewoo DMH500 horizontal machining center and the Daewoo DMV6025s were selected because of our positive experience with previously purchased Daewoo machines and Daewoo's reputation for building rigid, reliable machining centers."

Mr. Shepherd also reported that the key to purchasing any machine tool is having an organization that can stand behind its equipment and provide great service. Carl Amick said, "We feel strongly that we can meet our customers' requirements for great service better than any other distributor in the area. Visit our facility and see how and why we can back up our capability."
