Gantry CMM Provides Flexible Inspection Capabilities

A custom inspection facility located in Westland, MI, sought a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) that was precise, flexible and reliable.

Talwin Consultants, Inc. provides engineering solutions and custom measurement inspections for manufacturers like General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Eaton Corp., American Axle and others. The company has also provided application engineers to sub-contract to DaimlerChrysler, GM, Ford, Linamar and other large manufacturing companies.

Robert Talbot, President, and Kevin Winter, Vice President, wanted to provide accuracy, repeatability and flexibility for their manufacturing customers and give customers a high comfort level knowing Talwin Consultants used quality CMMs.

They chose a Carl Zeiss MMZ-B Gantry CMM capable of measuring a part 2000mm x 4000mm x 1500mm (X, Y & Z axis). Accuracy is based on ISO 10360-2 = 4.0 + L/200. The 3D vector speed is 600mm per second. "The gantry coordinate measuring machine is equipped with the Carl Zeiss VAST Gold "Active" continuous scanning probe, giving Talwin the capability of measuring the most complex parts without compromising speed or accuracy," said Kevin Santilli, National Sales Manager, Carl Zeiss IMT Corp. "Whether their needs are the measurement of Free Form surfaces or Prismatic Geometry, these requirements will be met by the Carl Zeiss software, Calypso."

Talwin Consultants already owned Carl Zeiss CMMs: Prismo 7, Prismo 10 and Pro-T. The Carl Zeiss Prismo 7 can inspect a part 900mm x 1500mm x 700mm and it utilizes a rotary table. The Prismo 10 has a 1200mm x 2400mm x 1000mm capacity. Both CMMs run the Calypso software and UMESS UX software. The company's Carl Zeiss Pro-T, with 4000mm x 1800mm x 2100mm capacity, runs Calypso, Holos and Metrolog software. Offline workstations run UMESS-UX and Calypso software.

Talwin Consultants is a multi-faceted company providing custom and contract inspection; CMM turnkey projects including the CMM, styli and adapter plates; and Carl Zeiss CMM calibration.

"With our new CMM, utilizing the latest Carl Zeiss Calypso software we have written CMM programs for Eaton Hydraulics and have simply e-mailed the programs to Eaton," said Robert Talbot. "With minimal instruction, Eaton employees were able to install and run the program on their own CMM," said Mr. Talbot. "Also, with the Calypso planner we can import the CAD model, build up stylus configurations (simulation) and run the CMM program all in simulation. The Calypso planner also checks for collisions and then downloads CMM programs for our customers. We also have the capability to collect data for different statistical packages and customer requirements."

Talwin Consultants is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company and recently became an ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited lab. "With the new Calypso software we acquired from Carl Zeiss, we can truly serve all of our customers needs. Because of Carl Zeiss's commitment to this product and continued product enhancements, we are confident we will meet our customers' requirements. It is because of Zeiss's commitment to quality and service that we are confident we made the right decision when we chose to purchase Carl Zeiss equipment," said Mr. Talbot.

Talwin Consultants is a global integrator of Zeiss CMM inspection systems and provides CMM programming, training, support, probe tooling and fixturing.
