Carroll Machine Works Serves Oil Field and Aerospace with Excel Turning Centers

Carroll Machine Works, located in Pasadena, recently took delivery of their second Excel CNC turning center sold and serviced by Marathon Machine Tools. Wayne Carroll, owner and president of Carroll Machine Works, bought his first SLT-500 Excel turning center two years ago. “I have been impressed with the performance and reliability of that machine,” said Mr. Carroll. “The Excel easily mastered heavy duty oil field work with its standard gearbox drive, steel box way construction and robust five-bearing main spindle. When the time came to replace the company’s aging Takisawa turning center Carroll turned to Marathon Machine Tools for a new machine. “Marathon offered me the Excel SLT-400 big bore model and convinced me to go with the live tool version. The price/performance ratio of this machine was appealing to us. The live tool option gave me additional capabilities for our turning division,” Wayne Carroll stated. The Excel SLT-400/1000 model has 21” swing over bed, 4.5” spindle bore and 45” center distance. It features a 30 HP gearbox spindle drive, 60 degree slant bed with steel box ways, 12-station VDI servo turret and heavy duty tailstock. The live tool model offers heavy-duty servo driven C-axis and a live tool turret capable of holding up to 12 rotary tools. Mr. Carroll also ordered a hydraulic omni rest in order to be able to machine long, slender work pieces. Carroll Machine Works has been serving the Houston oil and aerospace industry for 12 years. In its 14,000 sq. ft. fully air conditioned building it maintains a quality control room with two CMMs, an automatic tool crib center to efficiently provide tools and inserts when and where needed, and utilizes eight CNC machining centers, four CNC turning centers and an EDM machine. Carroll provides precision machining and 100% quality traceability for his customers.
