Complex aerospace components are difficult to measure and inspect. Inspecting complex components in larger volumes is an even greater challenge. Tampa Bay Machining, Tampa, FL, faced these two challenges when company management began to search for a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Tampa Bay Machining specializes in the machining of titanium and aluminum complex military and commercial aerospace components. These components must be accurate every time. "Increasing production demands for complex parts required a new high accuracy CMM with |

repeatability," said Ryan Morrish, Quality Manager, Tampa Bay Machining. "This new CMM had to be programmable so it would increase productivity and throughput of inspected parts." Tampa Bay Machining management chose the Carl Zeiss CONTURA G2 CMM. The CONTURA G2 utilizes Zeiss' Calypso 4.4 CAD (computer aided design) interactive software. A fully articulating rotary dynamic sensor (RDS) motorized probe head with a Renishaw TP20 touch trigger probe works within a measuring envelope of 27.5 x 39 x 18 inches. The RDS has the positioning capability of 20,736 positions which offers the user more measurement capability. The VAST XXT Scanning Sensor is designed for measurement of parts requiring angular positions. This sensor accepts lateral styli up to 40 mm. It has additional scanning functionality to provide more measuring information on the form of a component's features. Tampa Bay Machining was able to increase inspection throughput while maintaining a high AQL (Assured Quality Level). "Thanks to the programmable Zeiss CONTURA's speed and accuracy, our Quality Department has been able to keep up with the increased volume levels and ensure a high level of quality is maintained. We have seen a 25 percent improvement in our inspection throughput," said Mr. Morrish. Tampa Bay Machining was founded in 1981 and is owned by Jeff Kefauver. The company's machining capabilities include milling on a number of Matsuura and Mori Seiki multi-tasking, horizontal and vertical milling machines and turning on several Mori Seiki machines. A fully equipped Quality Department can inspect and measure machined components to comply with aerospace and military specifications. The company has received a "Small Business of the Year" award from the city of Tampa, FL. Customers such as Raytheon E-Systems and Lockheed Martin have honored Tampa Bay Machining with "Supplier of the Year" awards. "Tampa Bay Machining has the extensive capacity, strong supplier contacts and advanced technology to provide our customers with high quality products," said Jeff Kefauver, President.
