Hougen Introduces Portable Magnetic Drill
Hougen Manufacturing has reintroduced
the efficiencies of portable holemaking with the latest evolution of drilling
equipment, the new, 2-speed Hougen HMD505 Portable Magnetic Drill. The new drill
incorporates rugged solid state electronics for reliable service, a heavy duty
motor for dependable power under the heaviest of cutting loads, and a magnet
built with high-strength holding forces. It features a quill feed arbor design
that eliminates the need for gib and slide adjustments, making the drill compact
and lightweight, yet easy to use and with a large drilling capacity. The drill
is ideal for building, construction and fabrication shop uses where stock is too
large and awkward for machine tool handling, for on-site installations and
assembly, and for general plant maintenance requirements.
The electrical ratings are 1680 Watt, 14 Amp and 50/60 hz. Plus, it has two-speed gearing (250 and 450 no-load rpms), allowing for optimum cutting tool efficiency for small hole making from 7/16" up to its largest capacity of a full 2-3/8 " diameter with 3 " depth of cut. The magnetic base has a small footprint of 4" x 8" yet has a powerful dead lift rating of 2560 lbs. and 1080 lbs. drill point breakaway on 1" plate; for 3/8" plate these figures are 1550 lb. and 820 lb., respectively. The HMD505 weighs just 45 lbs. and measures 20" H x 4-3/4" W x 10-3/4" L.
"The quill feed operation provides a faster and smoother feed into and throughout the cut, especially in deep hole drilling applications.
The HMD505 operates from a standard 115-volt power source and has a three-handle feed mechanism. For ergonomics, the quick change feed handles can be switched to either side of the drill with no tools required. Also, rear-positioned controls, including separate magnet engage/disengage and motor spindle on/off switches.
The HMD505 is equipped with Hougen standard operator safety features built in... including a motion detector that shuts the spindle off in the event that the magnet should shift, dual circuitry that prevents spindle start unless the magnet is engaged, and manual restart of the motor spindle following a power interruption. Each unit is also furnished with a high strength safety chain for securing to work surfaces, and a sturdy plastic carrying case.
The HMD505 uses Hougen "12,000-Series" Rotabroach annular cutters that cut round, burr-free holes from 50 to 80% faster than twist drills - with longer tool life. Because they are hollow and have Hougen's time-proven tooth geometry, the "12,000 -Series" cutters typically require less horsepower and torque. Cutters are available in sizes from 7/16" thru 2-3/8 " and 12mm thru 1 mm diameters and up to 3" depths of cut. For long tool life and high quality hole production, the HMD505 has an on-board thru-the-spindle gravity fed coolant reservoir for normal, vertical drilling, or is converted to pressurized operation for horizontal applications.
In addition to the HMD505 unit, Hougen products comprise 12 other models of portable magnetic drills, with hole capacities to 3-1/16" diameter and 3" depth of cut, Punch-ProŠ portable electro-hydraulic hole punchers, plus a wide range of annular cutter series for a variety of applications, including sheet metal and tubing - for portable fabricating equipment as well as stationary machine tools.
